Founding

Carers UK was established in 1965 by Reverend Mary Webster as the National Council for the Single Woman and her Dependants (NCSWD). Initially, the organisation focused on providing guidance and advocacy for women who were caring for relatives at home. This marked the beginning of our journey to support unpaid carers across the UK.

The 1980s

During the 1980s, the organisation underwent significant transformation, before eventually merging with another carers' organisation, the Association of Carers, to form Carers UK. These changes expanded the organisation's reach and strengthened its influence on policy matters affecting carers.

The charity was a formal way for carers to stay informed, receive support, and participate actively in shaping the organisation's mission. Today, Carers UK has a membership of more than 45,000 unpaid carers, demonstrating its vital role in connecting and supporting the carer community.

Caring magazine

In time, the first edition of Caring magazine was published. This resource quickly became a key tool for carers, offering practical advice, personal stories, and updates on policy developments. The magazine continues to be an essential resource for Carers UK members, providing regular updates on rights, benefits, and members' experiences.

Other resources

Carers UK provides various in-depth resources to support carers in their roles. These include the guide Looking After Someone, the State of Caring survey, and the annual members' conference, all of which aim to provide valuable insights and practical tools to empower carers.

Current support and services

Today, Carers UK offers a wide range of support and services tailored to the needs of unpaid carers. This includes a dedicated helpline and digital support through advice lines and online forums, which enable carers to connect and share experiences. The organisation also hosts online meetups such as Care for a Cuppa and Share and Learn, fostering community and mutual support among carers.

In addition, Carers UK provides guides and tools, including factsheets on financial, practical, emotional, and workplace-related issues. The Employers for Carers initiative supports businesses in creating carer-friendly workplaces, further expanding the charity's impact.

Future plans

Looking ahead, Carers UK is committed to enhancing accessible support for carers and fostering inclusive membership growth by reaching carers earlier in their journeys. The organisation also aims to lead on policy development, shaping national care legislation, advocating for comprehensive social care reforms, and securing better financial safeguards for carers.

For more than six decades, Carers UK has championed the rights of unpaid carers and provided accessible support. Despite the progress made, the charity acknowledges there is still more to do. Through its membership, helplines, and resources like Caring magazine, Carers UK remains steadfast in its mission to improve the lives of unpaid carers today and in the years to come.
