Yesterday the UK Chancellor's announced that the earnings threshold for Carer's Allowance will be increased by £45 per week enabling unpaid carers to access additional income from their paid employment. We wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice to ask the Scottish Government to replicate this within Scotland’s Carer Support Payment to ensure that carers in Scotland will also see the same benefit.

30 October 2024 Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice Scottish Government Dear Ms Somerville We are writing to highlight today’s announcement by the Chancellor that the Carer’s Allowance earnings threshold will be increased by £45 per week. The new threshold will be equivalent to 16 hours at the new rate of national living wage. Carers Scotland warmly welcomes this announcement by the UK Government which will enable unpaid carers to access additional income from paid employment. Carers Scotland seeks assurances that the Scottish Government will replicate this increase within Social Security Scotland’s Carer Support Payment to ensure that carers in employment across Scotland can benefit from this improvement. We look forward to hearing from you in due course and will be happy to discuss this, and any other issues related to social security for unpaid carers. Yours sincerely Fiona Collie Head of Public Affairs & Communications
